COMETS:THE COSMIC SNOWBALLS

YOU ALL HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE WORD COMETS..

BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY REALLY ARE?

TODAY I M GOING TO SHARE MY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COMETS..!!

COMETS are the cosmic snowballs of frozen gases mix with dust,which orbit the sun.They have been referred to as "DUSTY SNOW BALLS".They may yield important clues about the formation of our solar system. Comets may have brought water and organic compounds, the building blocks of life, to the early Earth and other parts of the solar system. When passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases.This produces a visible atmosphere, and sometimes also a tail.

Unlike the other small bodies in the solar system,comets have been known since antiquity.

NOW LET ME TAKE YOU TO THE HISTORY OF THE COMETS....

In 1995,878 comets have been cataloged.Of these 184 are periodic comets whose orbital periods less than 200 years.These are the mixture of ices(both water and frozen gases).

Comets are invisible except when they are near the Sun.

Most comets have highly eccentric orbits which take them far beyond the orbit of PLUTO,these are seen once and then disapper for thousand of years.Only the short period comets like COMET HALLEY,Stay within the orbit of pluto.

WHEN THEY ARE NEAR TO THE SUN,COMETS HAVE SEVERAL DISTINCT PARTS:

👉NUCLEUS - composed of rock,dust and frozen gases,relatively stable and solid;

👉COMA - the coma is made as the comet warms up and is often 1000 times larger than the nucleus.The coma and the nucleus together forms the head of the comet.

👉HYDROGEN CLOUD - surrounding the coma there is an invisible layer of hydrogen called hydrogen cloud.It has a irregular shape becoz it is distorted by solar wind.This cloud gets bigger as the comet approaches the sun.

👉DUST TAIL - it always faces to the sun.This part is easiest to see becoz it reflects the sunlight.The dust tail is often curved becoz the comet is moving in its orbit at the same speed that the dust is moving away.

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST..

👉ION TAIL - made up of electrically charged gas molecules such as carbondioxide,nitrogen,water that are pushed away from nucleus by solarwind.

NOW LET ME TELL YOU FEW INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT COMETS:

🔥COMETS COME FROM KUIPER BELT(it is near pluto) AND OORT CLOUD(it is so far away from the sun tht we have never seen it).

🔥THERE ARE MILLIONS OF COMETS,AND THEY ARE ALL ORBITING THE SUN.

🔥TRAVELLING THROUGH A COMETS'S TAIL IS NOT DANGEROUS.

🔥THE WORD COMET COMES FROM THE GREEK WORD KOMETES,IT MEANS LONG HAIR.

🔥THE MOST FAMOUS COMET OF ALL TIME IS HALLEY'S COMET.
